England Through The Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
York is bursting with fascinating places. There’s ancient architecture and historical interest around every corner and the main places to see are all to be found within a fairly compact, pedestrian friendly centre. A huge range of food and drink is on offer and the locals seem (justifiably) proud of their beautiful city and its rich history.

I would say to make sure you wear comfortable shoes because there are cobbled streets. It is quite crowded mid morning on so I would suggest walking around early if you want to get a good look. The shops will be open later...

Bit of both worlds - of course there is the modern with the usual shops but there is another side too.
The Shambles is like stepping back into Harry Potter and the ramparts which can be walked around are just fantastic. Then there is the Minster but do walk there if possible as parking pretty horrendous as you might expect.
Museums and galleries to explore and if your better half doesn't go for all the history stuff then leave them in the coffee houses and vast array of shops and meet back up later.
Easy to get around if you don't mind walking a bit and often uphill ( well slight inclines anyway). The bridges are lovely too and make easy muster points.
Have a drive around the surrounding countryside too - Beverley and Pocklington and Stamford Bridge - all easy driving and well worth that day out.
Just lovely.

York is an absolute must.
York is an absolute must. Out of 9 cities in the UK over 2.5 weeks, it is in our top 2-3. It is full of history, character, and uniqueness you will not find anywhere else. The Minster was our favorite (even over Westminster). We loved walking the cobble streets, the Shambles, shopping, pubs, restaurants, the Wall, learning of the significant pivotal history York was. We will be back!

A walk around the walls. The railway museum was brilliant.
A walk around the walls. The railway museum was brilliant. The Treasurer's House (NT) was very interesting with a lovely cafe and garden. Both cafe and garden can be visited without paying the entrance fee. Evensong at the Minster was lovely and the interior as beautiful as the outside. York is a great place to amble around, nice shops, lots of good places to eat and drink. Second visit to Little Italy and the food was delicious. Interesting architecture.
We came for a 2 night stay. We were very kindly upgraded when we arrived, which was so lovely. The hotel was clean and nicely decorated. The bed and bedding were fabulous like sleeping on a cloud.room facilities were great, tea and coffee station, huge t.v, beautiful veiw from the room. The leisure facilities were excellent, very clean and were open till late so we got to use them after a day and night of walking all of York.Bus stop just outside, to take you into the train station or york city centre. We would definitely stay again.
All of the staff were extremely polite, friendly, helpful and efficient. Improvements in the reception and lounge areas from our previous stay in this hotel were very good. The food at dinner was excellent and breakfast had a wide choice of items and again was a great start to the day. The room was spacious with a very comfortable bed. The room was also very clean on arrival. The hotel is in a great location near to a park and ride which takes you into York city centre.
A nice, unassuming guest house with simple accommodations. The rooms are small but use the space well. The bathroom is tiny but again, this is a guest house and not a four-star hotel. The owner is very friendly and helpful, and for five pounds prepares a wonderful breakfast of a ham sandwich and coffee. The ham (bacon) is fresh from a local butcher. Located 10 minutes by foot from the Minster and central York.
Location was really great, very central and near to the main sights of York City centre. Breakfast was good. Liked the variety and option for a hot breakfast too. I would have preferred it starting slightly earlier but I appreciate most don't get up early at the weekend. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating so that is a real plus. Makes a massive difference to your perception of a short hotel stay.
I booked my room after checking out of an awful hotel. It was affordable, the staff were great and helpful, the room was clean and everything was working. The shower is a decent size and the bed was very comfy. It's only 8 mins from York city centre so the location is also great. It was my first time staying at a Radisson and am happy to say I'll do so several times more because you get what you expect.
Rooms were very clean, comfy beds, nice showers. Very historical, charming building but rooms had all the modern amenities you'd need as well. Breakfast was wonderful and set us up well for a full day of touring. All staff were very kind and helpful throughout our stay. We really enjoyed our stay in beautiful, historical York and especially felt a warm welcome from this little boutique hotel.
Nice accommodation option with a comfortable bed, not far away from the city center. Good value for money. There is no 24 h reception desk, but nonetheless I was able to communicate with the hosts easily and drop off and pick up my suitcase when needed. There was complimentary coffee and tea in the room, which was very nice (this seems to be common in England according to my experience).
My mother and l had a fabulous stay in York at The Dean Court Hotel.during the #JVF 2024 in February.
All the staff were friendly,Kind and very professional. Gary our waiter was lovely , humourous and very helpful every evening when we ordered our meals and drinks with him.
The room had a great view looking out over the York Minster.
We loved this place. Gorgeous hotel with amazing staff! Loved the decor & the restaurant was fabulous. Great value for money it felt like a 5 star treatment the whole time we were there. Location is walking distance to the centre of York. We also had treatments in the spa which I highly recommend.
Good location, plenty of buses opposite Hotel, to get into York centre, train station 15 minutes walk away and lovely clean room, pure white soft towels, couldn't fault anything and breakfast was delicious! Lots of choices!! Had a double room on ground floor and would definitely book again!
Funky Marriott owned hotel in a fabulous location in York. Superb value for money. Rooms a good size for a city hotel and very clean. Staff absolutely lovely. Large bar and food available. Small quiet beer garden. Parking very close at Shambles multistory for £10 a day.
Very quaint clean room in the heart of York, no more than ten minutes walk from excellent shopping, attractions and nightlight. Comfortable bed and good facilities, loved the biscuits and tea! Easy access to the hotel's excellent restaurant which serves delicious food.
Hotel is in excellent location 5 mins from Minster itself and centre of York. Room was large with king size bed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with many choices of cooked items which were cooked to order.
Very close to Center of York AND WITH PARKING !! We booked through Booking.com as slightly cheaper but car parking £7 per night . We were informed parking would have been free if booked with Hotel directly..
Centrally located in York city centre. Not far from the train station. The hotel had ample parking also if you need it. The hotel room was large, well laid out and comfortable. Great breakfast also.
Beautiful boutique hotel with only a short walk to york minister. The staff went above and beyond in so many areas to make our stay perfect! Amazing room called the "Yorkie"
